OUR GATHERING NEARLY STARTED OFF
WITH A DISASTER.
What’s a Bike Gathering without a bar ! ! !
Earlier this year….. in May to be precise…… I
had organised for our bar to be run by Chris the owner of the “iBheshu
Sports Bar” on the same basis as he had done at our 2010 Gathering.
Much to my surprise and shock……. three days
before the date of our Gathering to take place….. I got a laconic call
from him and a feeble excuse that “He couldn’t run our Bar”.
Now…… try and find at short notice reliable and
capable people to run a bar ……. with access to a variety of alcoholics……
and being in a position…… after the event…… to accommodate left-over
opened bottles of alcohol…...
Marlies and I spent a whole day and a half
phoning and riding around…….finally….. after we had given up all hope………
we found Karen Botha of the “BEER BIN” who….. after much begging and
bargaining was prepared to help us bikers in distress……. be our saviour
angel…… and run the bar.
Karen and her husband did an excellent job
running our Bar……. especially taking in consideration they never had done
such a job before and didn’t have a business where to dispose of the
left-over half-full/empty bottles to.
Eventually they were so impressed……. and had
such a great time with the Vmaxers that they……. whilst closing the bar on
Sunday morning (00,30 hours)…… gave two halve full bottles containing high
alcohol percentage spirits to the last remaining three…… slightly
THE WEATHER GODS also tried to throw a Spanner
in the Works….. for quite a few of our members driving from the
Johannesburg and Vanderbijlpark areas experienced “ Cats and Dogs” quality
rain….. to the effect that some of the Vmaxers and their friends left
their bikes at home and came by car…… Others put their bikes on a trailer.
Another four guys……. without proper rain gear….. got as far as Harrismith
where they left their bikes and continued to the Gathering by rented car.
Fortunately the weather gods felt sorry for us
on Friday and steered the rain clouds wide away from Koinonia outside
Botha’s Hill…… our Gatherings venue.
WESSEL KRUGER had a great delivery ride from
his home in Cape Town to the Gathering on the beautiful 20th Anniversary
Special Edition No 1014/200 Vmax Hans Vrolijk had bought from Droomers
Yamaha Cape Town, As per Wessel’s style….. he didn’t take the Great Circle
route of 1600kms as advised by his GPS….. but took some scenic long-cuts
instead and ended up in doing approximately 1800kms in 1 ½ days. Wessel
has become quite proficient in taking professional shots whilst riding his
bike…….. this time he managed to take a few hundred pix of the ride.
Check his album on the VMOG Facebook page.
WAS THIS YEARS GATHERING A GREAT SUCCESS ? ?
